Overview
Cisplatin + fluorouracil is a combination chemotherapy regimen used to treat several types of cancer, including head and neck, oesophageal, anal, and sometimes other cancers. Cisplatin is a platinum-based alkylating agent that cross-links DNA strands, inhibiting DNA replication and leading to cell death. Fluorouracil (also known as 5-fluorouracil or 5FU) is an antimetabolite that inhibits thymidylate synthase, blocking the synthesis of thymidine required for DNA replication; it can also be incorporated into RNA, disrupting RNA processing and protein synthesis. Both drugs target rapidly dividing cells such as cancer cells[1][2][4][5][6].
