This investigational combination treatment consists of the small molecule chemotherapeutic agents cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) delivered topically via ablative fractional laser (AFL) assistance. Developed by researchers led by Merete Haedersdal at Bispebjerg University Hospital, the approach is specifically designed to treat basal cell carcinoma (BCC), including superficial and nodular subtypes. The procedure involves using a CO2 laser to create microscopic channels in the skin, followed by the sequential topical application of a cisplatin solution and a 5-FU cream. Cisplatin acts as a DNA cross-linking agent, while 5-FU is a pyrimidine analog that inhibits thymidylate synthase; together, they work synergistically to induce apoptosis in tumor cells. This method aims to provide a localized, high-concentration chemotherapy alternative to systemic treatments or surgery for non-melanoma skin cancers.
