A combination therapy consisting of cisplatin, pemetrexed, and salazosulfapyridine (SASP). This treatment targets cancer stem cells in advanced non-squamous non-small-cell lung cancer. Salazosulfapyridine inhibits xCT, which is stabilized by CD44v (a marker of cancer stem cells in solid tumors). By inhibiting xCT, SASP suppresses the proliferation of CD44v-positive cancer cells by reducing their ability to synthesize the antioxidant glutathione.
