Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a combination chemotherapy regimen consisting of cisplatin (also known as cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II) or CDDP), sodium thiosulfate (STS), and vindesine. Cisplatin is a platinum-based antineoplastic agent that forms DNA crosslinks, leading to apoptosis in rapidly dividing cancer cells. Vindesine is a vinca alkaloid that inhibits microtubule formation, thereby disrupting mitosis in cancer cells. Sodium thiosulfate acts as a chemoprotectant; it neutralizes the toxic effects of cisplatin, particularly nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity, by binding to reactive platinum species and facilitating their excretion without significantly impairing the antitumor efficacy of cisplatin[1][3][4]. This combination has been studied primarily for non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) and other solid tumors[1][9]. The addition of sodium thiosulfate allows higher or repeated dosing of cisplatin by reducing its renal toxicity and risk of hearing loss[1][4][5].
