cisplatin + technetium Tc 99m rhenium sulfide is a combination of the platinum-based chemotherapeutic agent cisplatin and the radiopharmaceutical tracer Nanocis (technetium [99mTc] rhenium sulfide colloid). This combination is specifically utilized in the management of advanced ovarian cancer and peritoneal carcinomatosis via intraperitoneal (IP) administration. Following cytoreductive surgery, cisplatin is delivered directly into the peritoneal cavity to target residual microscopic disease. Nanocis is co-administered as a diagnostic radiotracer to perform IP scintigraphy, allowing clinicians to visualize the distribution of the chemotherapy within the abdominal cavity. This imaging helps identify potential distribution issues caused by postoperative adhesions and correlates drug accumulation with clinical outcomes or side effects like abdominal pain. Cisplatin exerts its cytotoxic effect by forming covalent cross-links with DNA, while Nanocis provides the gamma-emitting isotope for scintigraphic imaging.
