Overview
Roucongrong + Heshouwu is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herbal combination consisting of Cistanche deserticola (Roucongrong) and Reynoutria multiflora (Heshouwu, formerly known as Polygonum multiflorum). This combination is traditionally utilized to tonify the kidney and liver, replenish essence and blood, and promote longevity. In modern pharmacological research, it is primarily investigated for its neuroprotective, anti-aging, and immunomodulatory properties. The active constituents include phenylethanoid glycosides (such as echinacoside and acteoside) from Cistanche and stilbene glycosides (such as 2,3,5,4'-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-β-D-glucoside) from Heshouwu. It is frequently studied in the context of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's due to its potential to reduce oxidative stress, inhibit neuronal apoptosis, and modulate neurotrophic factors.
