Citalopram + paroxetine is a combination of two selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), each used individually for the treatment of depression and various anxiety disorders. Both drugs act primarily by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) in the central nervous system, thereby increasing serotonergic neurotransmission. Citalopram is known for its high selectivity toward serotonin reuptake inhibition with minimal effects on other neurotransmitters, while paroxetine also exhibits mild noradrenergic activity through norepinephrine reuptake inhibition at higher doses. The concurrent use of these two SSRIs is not standard clinical practice due to a significantly increased risk of serotonin syndrome—a potentially life-threatening condition resulting from excessive serotonergic activity[1][4]. This combination should generally be avoided unless specifically directed and closely monitored by a healthcare professional.
