Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Citalopram + risperidone is a combination of two pharmaceutical drugs, each with distinct mechanisms of action. Citalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used primarily for depression, anxiety disorders, and other mood disorders. It works by increasing serotonin levels in the brain by inhibiting its reuptake into neurons[7]. Risperidone is an atypical antipsychotic used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and irritability associated with autistic disorder. It acts as an antagonist at dopamine D2 receptors and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors[6]. The combination has been studied for potential augmentation effects in treatment-resistant depression or negative symptoms in schizophrenia[4][5]. However, combining these drugs can increase the risk of serious side effects such as irregular heart rhythm (QT prolongation)[1][2].
