A bivalent HIV-1 vaccine candidate composed of two recombinant envelope glycoproteins: clade C gp140 and mosaic gp140. Both are trimeric, recombinant forms of the HIV-1 Env protein, with clade C representing a prevalent global subtype and mosaic gp140 engineered to include motifs from multiple HIV-1 subtypes. The combination is designed to broaden immune responses against diverse strains of HIV-1. The vaccine is typically adjuvanted with aluminum phosphate and administered as part of a heterologous regimen that may also include an adenovirus serotype 26 vector (Ad26.Mos4.HIV). Developed by Janssen Vaccines & Prevention, this approach aimed to induce robust antibody responses across multiple global regions where different subtypes predominate. Clinical trials demonstrated enhanced immunogenicity compared to single-valent regimens but did not show efficacy in preventing HIV infection in large phase 3 studies[1][2][3][4].
