ClariVein RES is a mechanochemical ablation (MOCA) system developed by Vascular Insights (now part of Merit Medical Systems) for the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency, particularly in the great saphenous vein. The system utilizes a specialized catheter with a rotating wire tip that mechanically disrupts the endothelial lining of the target vessel. Simultaneously, a liquid sclerosant, typically sodium tetradecyl sulfate (STS), is infused through the catheter. The mechanical agitation increases the surface area of the vein wall and enhances the penetration of the sclerosant, leading to rapid protein denaturation, endothelial destruction, and subsequent fibrosis and permanent occlusion of the vein. As a non-thermal, non-tumescent (NTNT) procedure, it eliminates the need for tumescent anesthesia and avoids the risks of thermal nerve injury associated with laser or radiofrequency ablation.
