Overview

Clindamycin + dexamethasone is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used primarily as an intravitreal injection for the treatment of ocular toxoplasmosis, specifically toxoplasmic retinochoroiditis. Clindamycin is a semi-synthetic lincosamide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby exerting bacteriostatic effects against susceptible anaerobic bacteria and some protozoa such as Toxoplasma gondii. Dexamethasone is a potent synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties; it acts by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor, modulating gene expression to suppress pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators. The combination allows for targeted antimicrobial action against Toxoplasma while reducing local inflammation in the eye. This regimen has been shown to be effective in resolving active lesions, improving visual outcomes, and sparing patients from systemic side effects associated with oral therapy[1][3].
