Overview

Clindamycin + gentamicin is a combination of two antibiotics used primarily for the treatment of serious infections, notably pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Clindamycin is a lincosamide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, providing strong activity against anaerobic bacteria and some Gram-positive organisms. Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit, disrupting protein synthesis and exhibiting bactericidal activity mainly against aerobic Gram-negative bacteria. The combination leverages their complementary spectra to cover both anaerobic and aerobic pathogens commonly implicated in severe gynecological or intra-abdominal infections[1][3][5]. This regimen is recommended by clinical guidelines for PID and has demonstrated efficacy in clinical studies[1][8].
