Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Clindamycin + metronidazole** is a combination of two antibiotics used primarily for topical treatment of inflammatory and infectious skin conditions such as acne vulgaris, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and ulcers. Clindamycin, a semi-synthetic lincosamide antibiotic, inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, targeting susceptible gram-positive aerobes like staphylococci and streptococci as well as anaerobes. Metronidazole, a nitroimidazole, exhibits bactericidal activity against anaerobic bacteria and parasites by disrupting DNA synthesis after intracellular reduction, and demonstrates anti-inflammatory effects via inhibition of reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide production, and NF-κB activation. The combination shows synergistic anti-inflammatory activity in topical formulations, particularly for dermatological conditions with both inflammatory and infectious components, and is also investigated for bacterial vaginosis.
