Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Clobetasol propionate + coal tar is a topical combination therapy used primarily for the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions such as plaque psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and eczema. Clobetasol propionate is a superpotent synthetic corticosteroid that acts by binding to glucocorticoid receptors, leading to anti-inflammatory, antipruritic (anti-itch), and vasoconstrictive effects through the induction of phospholipase A2 inhibitory proteins (lipocortins), which suppress the biosynthesis of pro-inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Coal tar is a keratoplastic agent that slows down excessive skin cell proliferation associated with psoriasis and other dermatoses; it also has anti-inflammatory properties and helps reduce itching, scaling, and thickening of the skin. The combination leverages both rapid symptom relief from corticosteroids and disease-modifying effects from coal tar[1][2][5][10].
