Clomiphene citrate + gonadotropins is a combination therapy used primarily in the treatment of female infertility, especially for ovulation induction in women who do not ovulate regularly or are resistant to clomiphene alone. Clomiphene citrate is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) that acts on the hypothalamus and pituitary to increase secretion of endogenous follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), thereby stimulating ovarian follicular development and ovulation[6][7][9]. Gonadotropins are injectable hormones—typically FSH, LH, or human menopausal gonadotropin (hMG)—that directly stimulate the ovaries to promote follicular growth and maturation. The combination is often used in assisted reproductive technologies such as controlled ovarian stimulation for in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI), particularly when monotherapy with either agent is insufficient[1][2][5]. This regimen may reduce medication costs and lower risks of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome compared to high-dose gonadotropin protocols but can be associated with increased cycle cancellation rates and reduced oocyte yield[5].
