Drug intelligence / Profile preview
clonazepam + Mucolox is a compounded mucoadhesive oral formulation being evaluated by the University of Alberta for the treatment of burning mouth syndrome (BMS). The formulation consists of 1 mg of clonazepam, a benzodiazepine, in 5 mL of Mucolox, a proprietary mucoadhesive drug delivery vehicle. Mucolox is designed to adhere to the oral mucosa, thereby increasing the contact time and local concentration of the active ingredient. In clinical trials, the mixture is swished in the mouth for three minutes and then expectorated three times daily. This approach aims to provide superior pain relief compared to standard clonazepam tablets by enhancing the drug's residence time on the affected oral tissues. Clonazepam acts as a positive allosteric modulator of the GABA-A receptor, which is hypothesized to reduce the neuropathic pain associated with BMS.
