clotrimazole + clindamycin

Clotrigel C is a fixed-dose combination of the imidazole antifungal clotrimazole and the lincosamide antibiotic clindamycin. Developed by Glenmark Farmaceutica, it is formulated as vaginal ovules (pessaries) containing 200 mg of clotrimazole and 100 mg of clindamycin. The combination is designed to treat mixed vaginitis, bacterial vaginosis, and vulvovaginal candidiasis by simultaneously targeting fungal and bacterial pathogens. Clotrimazole acts by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a key component of fungal cell membranes, leading to cell lysis. Clindamycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. A Phase 3 clinical trial (EudraCT 2011-003147-22) was conducted in Spain to evaluate the efficacy and safety of these ovules compared to metronidazole plus nystatin vaginal cream for mixed vaginitis.
