Overview

CMV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) is an adoptive cellular immunotherapy developed by the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for the treatment and prevention of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and reactivation. The therapy utilizes recipient-derived (autologous) or donor-derived T cells that are selected or expanded ex vivo to specifically target CMV-infected cells. These CTLs recognize viral antigens, most notably the 65 kDa phosphoprotein (pp65) and immediate-early protein 1 (IE-1), presented on the surface of infected cells via major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules. This approach is primarily evaluated in immunocompromised patients, such as allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) recipients, to restore viral-specific immunity and control CMV replication when conventional antiviral drugs are insufficient or toxic.
