CMV-specific T-cells developed at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, is an investigational allogeneic cell-based immunotherapy designed to treat refractory cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections in immunocompromised patients, including solid organ transplant (SOT) and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients. The therapy consists of donor-derived T lymphocytes (both CD4+ and CD8+) that are isolated and enriched for their ability to recognize CMV antigens. The production process utilizes automated systems like the CliniMACS Prodigy to select for cells expressing interferon-gamma upon exposure to viral antigens. By infusing these virus-specific T cells (VSTs), the treatment aims to restore cell-mediated immunity and control viral replication in patients who have inadequate endogenous T-cell responses or have failed standard antiviral therapies.
