coactiv+ Antimicrobial Surgical Hydrogel is a topical therapeutic formulation developed by Kane Biotech to address biofilm-associated infections in chronic and surgical site wounds. The product utilizes the proprietary coactiv+ technology, which is a combination of small molecule chelating agents—specifically EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) and sodium citrate. This combination works by chelating essential metal ions, such as calcium, magnesium, and iron, which are necessary for the structural stability and maintenance of bacterial biofilms. By sequestering these ions and modulating the wound pH, the hydrogel destabilizes the biofilm matrix, thereby increasing the susceptibility of bacteria to the host immune system and other antimicrobial treatments. The formulation is designed as a thermo-reversible hydrogel that transforms into a liquid state when cooled for easy application and gels at body temperature. It is currently in preclinical development for the management of chronic wounds and surgical site infections.
