Overview

Monoclonal factor IX (brand name Mononine) is a highly purified, plasma-derived coagulation factor IX concentrate used for the treatment and prevention of bleeding in patients with Hemophilia B (Factor IX deficiency). It is distinguished from earlier plasma-derived products by its purification process, which utilizes immunoaffinity chromatography with a murine monoclonal antibody to isolate Factor IX from other plasma proteins. This method results in a product with high specific activity and a significantly reduced risk of thrombogenic complications (such as those associated with prothrombin complex concentrates) and viral transmission. Developed by Armour Pharmaceutical Company and currently marketed by CSL Behring, it was the first Factor IX product to achieve this level of purity, providing a safer alternative for patients before the introduction of recombinant Factor IX therapies.
