Overview
Fibrogamin P is a purified, pasteurized concentrate of Coagulation Factor XIII (FXIII) derived from human plasma. Factor XIII is a proenzyme that, when activated by thrombin in the presence of calcium ions, catalyzes the cross-linking of fibrin monomers to form a stable, insoluble clot. It also cross-links alpha-2-antiplasmin to fibrin, protecting the clot from premature degradation by plasmin. Fibrogamin P is primarily used for the treatment and prophylaxis of bleeding in patients with congenital or acquired Factor XIII deficiency. In the context of neurosurgery, it is investigated for preoperative correction of FXIII levels to reduce postoperative bleeding risks in patients with brain tumors who exhibit reduced FXIII activity.
