Overview

cobalamin + insulin is an experimental oral insulin delivery system developed by Access Pharmaceuticals (ACCP). The technology utilizes a proprietary platform where insulin nanoparticles are coated with cobalamin (Vitamin B12) to facilitate gastrointestinal absorption. By mimicking the natural physiological pathway for Vitamin B12 uptake, the cobalamin-coated nanoparticles bind to intrinsic factor in the gut, allowing the complex to be transported across the intestinal epithelium and into the bloodstream. This mechanism is intended to protect the insulin peptide from enzymatic degradation in the stomach and small intestine, potentially providing a viable oral alternative to subcutaneous insulin injections for the management of diabetes mellitus. Although the company entered into an agreement to initiate Phase 1 clinical trials around 2010, the development of this specific product appears to have been discontinued.
