Overview
Bronchodine is a combination oral syrup containing the opioid codeine and the expectorant guaifenesin. While traditionally indicated for the symptomatic treatment of non-productive cough, it is notably used in clinical research settings, such as those at KU Leuven, as a model agent to induce opioid-induced gastroparesis. By activating mu-opioid receptors in the enteric nervous system, the codeine component significantly delays gastric emptying and alters motility patterns. This pharmacological induction of gastric dysfunction serves as a controlled baseline for evaluating novel diagnostic technologies, including intragastric balloon pressure sensors designed to monitor gastric contractility and volume changes in patients with motility disorders.
