Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Colchicine + probenecid** is an oral fixed-dose antigout combination containing colchicine 0.5 mg and probenecid 500 mg per tablet. It is indicated for chronic gouty arthritis complicated by frequent, recurrent acute gout attacks. Probenecid is a uricosuric small molecule that decreases serum urate by inhibiting renal tubular urate reabsorption and increasing urinary uric-acid excretion. Colchicine binds tubulin and disrupts microtubule-dependent inflammatory processes, thereby reducing the inflammatory response to monosodium urate crystals. The original Merck brand, ColBenemid, has been discontinued; the combination remains available in the United States as generic oral tablets.
