Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Cold-stored platelet concentrate is an investigational biologic blood product being developed by the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute for the treatment of bleeding in patients with hematologic malignancies and thrombocytopenia. Unlike standard platelet products, which are stored at room temperature (20-24°C) for 5-7 days, these platelets are stored at cold temperatures (1-6°C). This storage method is intended to enhance the hemostatic function of the platelets and extend their shelf life to approximately 14 days. The product consists of pooled, pathogen-reduced platelets derived from human donors and is administered via intravenous transfusion to facilitate clot formation at sites of vascular injury.
