Colistin + ascorbic acid is an experimental combination therapy consisting of the antibiotic colistin and the antioxidant ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Colistin is a polymyxin antibiotic used primarily for treating multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections, but its clinical use is limited by dose-dependent nephrotoxicity. Ascorbic acid has been investigated for its potential to mitigate colistin-induced kidney damage due to its antioxidant properties. Preclinical studies in rats have shown that co-administration of ascorbic acid with colistin reduces markers of oxidative stress, inflammation, and tubular apoptosis in renal tissue, thereby ameliorating nephrotoxicity without compromising antibacterial efficacy. The mechanism involves scavenging reactive oxygen species and reducing inflammatory cytokine production induced by colistin[1][2][3][4]. This combination has not been approved for clinical use but is under investigation for improving the safety profile of colistin therapy.
