Overview

Colistin + imipenem is an antibiotic combination therapy used for treating multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacterial infections. Colistin (polymyxin E) acts on the bacterial cell membrane, disrupting its integrity and leading to cell death. Imipenem is a carbapenem antibiotic with a wide spectrum of activity against gram-negative and gram-positive aerobic and anaerobic bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. This combination has demonstrated synergistic effects against various difficult-to-treat pathogens, including *Enterobacter cloacae*, *Acinetobacter baumannii*, *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*, and *Klebsiella pneumoniae*, particularly in cases where resistance to individual agents has developed. It is primarily used for serious infections like pneumonia, bacteremia, urinary tract infections, and intra-abdominal infections caused by these resistant organisms.
