Overview

Colistin + minocycline is a combination of two antibiotics used primarily for the treatment of infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria, including extensively drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii and certain strains of Enterobacteriaceae. Colistin (also known as polymyxin E) is a cationic polypeptide antibiotic that disrupts bacterial cell membranes through a detergent-like mechanism, leading to cell death. Minocycline is a tetracycline-class antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. The combination has demonstrated synergistic bactericidal activity in vitro against strains resistant to either or both drugs alone, making it an important therapeutic option when other treatments are ineffective or unavailable[1][2][3][5]. This synergy allows for lower doses of each drug, potentially reducing toxicity while maintaining efficacy.
