Overview

This intervention is a sequential treatment protocol consisting of a 5-day course of oral non-absorbable antibiotics (colistin sulfate and neomycin sulfate) followed by fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). Developed by Stephen Harbarth and colleagues as part of the R-GNOSIS WP3 study, it aims to decolonize the intestinal tract of patients carrying extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (ESBL-E) and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE). The antibiotics are intended to reduce the load of resistant bacteria, while the subsequent FMT (administered via nasogastric tube or capsules) restores a healthy gut microbiome to prevent recolonization. The trial was conducted across multiple centers in Europe and Israel.
