Collagen + bone marrow mononuclear cells (BMMNCs) is a regenerative medicine combination therapy consisting of a three-dimensional collagen scaffold seeded with autologous bone marrow mononuclear cells. The collagen scaffold, often bovine-derived and specifically engineered (such as the NeuroRegen scaffold), serves as a physical bridge to facilitate axonal regeneration across tissue gaps, particularly in the central nervous system. The BMMNCs, a heterogeneous population including hematopoietic stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, and progenitor cells, act primarily through paracrine mechanisms. They secrete neurotrophic factors and immunomodulatory cytokines that create a permissive environment for neural repair, reduce inflammation, and support the survival of endogenous cells. This approach is primarily investigated for the treatment of complete spinal cord injury (SCI) to restore motor and sensory function.
