Overview

A combination intravenous fluid therapy consisting of a colloid solution and an acetated Ringer's solution. Colloid solutions are sterile water-based fluids containing large macromolecules (such as hydroxyethyl starch, gelatin, or albumin) that remain in the vascular compartment longer than crystalloids and exert oncotic pressure to expand plasma volume[6]. Acetated Ringer's solution is a balanced crystalloid similar to lactated Ringer’s but uses acetate instead of lactate as the buffer anion. Acetate is rapidly metabolized extrahepatically with less oxygen demand compared to lactate, making it preferable for patients with impaired liver function[3][5]. The combination is used for rapid intravascular volume expansion in settings such as hypovolemia, shock, surgery, or trauma where both immediate plasma expansion (from the colloid) and electrolyte/fluid replacement (from acetated Ringer’s) are needed.
