Overview
Colloidal oat + glycerin is a topical emollient combination used for skin barrier protection and the prevention of atopic dermatitis, particularly in high-risk infants. Colloidal oatmeal (Avena sativa) provides a complex mixture of polysaccharides, lipids, and proteins that form a protective film on the skin, while its avenanthramide components exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. Glycerin acts as a potent humectant, attracting and retaining moisture in the stratum corneum to improve skin hydration and elasticity. Clinical data from the STOP AD trial indicates that early, short-term use of this combination can modulate the infant skin microbiome, promoting the abundance of taxa associated with a lower risk of developing atopic dermatitis.
