A bismuth-containing quadruple therapy (BQT) regimen consisting of colloidal pectin bismuth, the proton pump inhibitor omeprazole, and the antibiotics metronidazole and tetracycline. This specific combination is being evaluated by the Xijing Hospital of Digestive Diseases for the first-line treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection. Colloidal pectin bismuth provides a mucosal protective effect and exerts direct antimicrobial activity against H. pylori by interfering with bacterial enzymes and cell wall integrity. Omeprazole increases gastric pH, which stabilizes the antibiotics and improves their efficacy. Metronidazole and tetracycline act synergistically to inhibit bacterial DNA and protein synthesis, respectively, helping to overcome antibiotic resistance common in H. pylori strains.
