This experimental research formulation was developed by the Medical University of Vienna for use in a clinical trial (NCT01350089) to investigate the interaction between caffeine and alcohol. The mixture contains 46.5 g of ethanol (administered as 37.5% vodka) and 80 mg of caffeine, combined with carbonated water and artificial fruit juice to a total volume of 500 mL. The study aimed to evaluate the masking effect, where caffeine might reduce the subjective perception of alcohol intoxication without altering objective impairment. This formulation served as a controlled comparator to isolate the effects of caffeine from other ingredients found in energy drinks. It is not a commercial pharmaceutical product but a standardized research mixture used to study the interaction effects of alcohol and caffeine on subjective intoxication measures.
