Overview

Compound 22 is a fluorinated benzylidene indanone derivative developed by the CSIR-Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CSIR-CIMAP) as a potential oral treatment for breast cancer. It acts as a dual-action anticancer agent, primarily functioning as a microtubule destabilizer by binding to the colchicine site on tubulin. This binding leads to G2/M phase cell cycle arrest and subsequent apoptosis in cancer cells. Beyond its direct cytotoxic effects, Compound 22 exhibits potent antiangiogenic activity by downregulating the expression of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) and Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α). Preclinical studies in mouse models have demonstrated significant tumor growth inhibition and a favorable safety profile, supporting its further development as a targeted small molecule therapy.
