Overview

Compound sodium acetate Ringer’s solution is a balanced intravenous crystalloid fluid used for fluid resuscitation, maintenance of hydration, and correction of electrolyte imbalances. It contains electrolytes such as sodium chloride, sodium acetate (as trihydrate), potassium chloride, calcium chloride dihydrate, and sometimes magnesium chloride hexahydrate dissolved in water. The solution is isotonic and designed to closely match the composition of extracellular fluid. Unlike traditional lactated Ringer’s solutions that use lactate as a buffer (metabolized in the liver), this formulation uses acetate as the buffering agent—making it preferable for patients with liver dysfunction or metabolic acidosis[5][6][7]. Acetate is rapidly metabolized to bicarbonate in muscle and other tissues to help correct acid-base disturbances[1][6]. Compound sodium acetate Ringer’s solution is widely used in critical care settings including pediatric septic shock resuscitation[1], surgery, emergency medicine, and general hospital hydration therapy.
