Overview
Conjugated equine estrogen + medroxyprogesterone acetate is a combination oral hormone therapy used primarily for the treatment of menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal changes, and for the prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. The product combines conjugated estrogens (a mixture derived from natural sources, mainly sodium estrone sulfate and sodium equilin sulfate) with medroxyprogesterone acetate (a synthetic progestin). Conjugated estrogens act as agonists at estrogen receptor to regulate gene expression involved in female sexual development and maintenance of secondary sexual characteristics. Medroxyprogesterone acts as an agonist at progesterone receptor to convert a proliferative endometrium into a secretory one, reducing the risk of endometrial hyperplasia associated with unopposed estrogen therapy. This combination is indicated for women with an intact uterus undergoing menopause[1][4][5][8].
