Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Convalescent plasma is a biological therapy derived from the plasma of individuals who have recovered from a specific viral infection, such as COVID-19. It contains a complex mixture of polyclonal antibodies, including high-titer neutralizing antibodies that specifically target the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. By transfusing this plasma into patients with active COVID-19, the treatment provides immediate passive immunity, which can neutralize the virus, inhibit its entry into host cells, and facilitate viral clearance. This specific expanded access program was sponsored by Jonathan Gerber to provide an experimental treatment option for patients during the pandemic, aiming to reduce disease severity and prevent complications.
