Convalescent plasma is a biologic therapy consisting of plasma collected from individuals who have recovered from COVID-19, containing high titers of neutralizing antibodies such as SARS-CoV-2 IgG and IgM. These antibodies provide passive immunity by binding to viral antigens, specifically the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, thereby neutralizing the virus and preventing its entry into host cells. This specific implementation of convalescent plasma therapy was evaluated in a clinical trial (NCT04441424) led by the Alkarkh Health Directorate in Baghdad, Iraq, focusing on critically-ill patients in respiratory care units. The study demonstrated that the administration of 400 ml of convalescent plasma could reduce the duration of infection and lower mortality rates compared to standard care. This approach serves as a form of passive immunotherapy rather than a manufactured pharmaceutical product.
