Convalescent plasma is a biologic therapy consisting of plasma collected from individuals who have recovered from COVID-19 infection. The active ingredient is plasma containing neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, particularly antibodies targeting the receptor-binding domain (RBD) of the viral spike protein. This investigational therapeutic approach was studied by Emory University School of Medicine and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta for treating severe or high-risk COVID-19 in pediatric patients aged 0-22 years. As a form of passive immunotherapy, the neutralizing antibodies in the plasma bind to viral proteins to prevent the infection of host cells. Research from Emory has demonstrated its use in pediatric cases, including patients with underlying conditions whose infections were refractory to other treatments like remdesivir.
