Convalescent plasma (Fundación Biomédica Galicia Sur) is a passive immunotherapy derived from the blood of individuals who have recovered from COVID-19. This specific therapeutic approach, investigated in the CoV-PlasGal Phase 2 trial, involves the early administration (within 5 days of symptom onset) of plasma containing high titers of neutralizing antibodies to patients at high risk for severe disease. The mechanism of action relies on the polyclonal antibodies binding to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, thereby blocking the virus's ability to enter host cells via the ACE2 receptor. This immediate transfer of immunity is intended to reduce viral load, limit tissue damage, and prevent the progression to severe respiratory distress and the need for oxygen therapy.
