Convalescent plasma is a passive immunotherapy approach involving the transfusion of plasma from individuals who have recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection to patients currently battling COVID-19. The plasma contains neutralizing antibodies that bind to the viral spike protein, preventing the virus from entering host cells and facilitating its clearance by the immune system. This specific program was evaluated by Helsinki University Central Hospital in a Phase 2, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study to assess the safety and efficacy of high-titre and low-titre convalescent plasma in hospitalized patients with acute COVID-19. The study aimed to determine if early administration could prevent disease progression, specifically looking at outcomes such as intubation or the initiation of systemic corticosteroids.
