Overview

Convalescent plasma is a biologic therapy consisting of blood plasma collected from individuals who have recovered from a specific infectious disease, such as COVID-19 or influenza. It contains high titers of neutralizing antibodies (primarily IgG) that provide passive immunity by binding to and neutralizing the pathogen, thereby preventing viral entry into host cells and reducing viral replication. In the context of the REMAP-CAP trial led by UMC Utrecht, it was evaluated as a treatment for patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia, including those with COVID-19 and influenza. While hypothesized to improve outcomes in severe respiratory infections, results from the REMAP-CAP trial indicated that convalescent plasma did not provide a clinical benefit for critically ill COVID-19 patients requiring intensive care support.
