Convalescent plasma therapy developed and studied by the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in New Delhi, India, is a passive immunotherapy approach for the treatment of severe COVID-19. This biological therapy involves the intravenous transfusion of plasma obtained from donors who have recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection. The therapeutic effect is primarily mediated by neutralizing antibodies (such as IgG and IgM) present in the donor plasma, which bind to the viral spike protein and prevent viral entry into host cells. ILBS conducted significant clinical research, including the Phase 3 COPLA-II trial, and established India's first dedicated convalescent plasma bank to facilitate the collection and distribution of high-titer plasma during the pandemic.
