Convalescent plasma is a passive immunotherapy derived from the blood of individuals who have recovered from COVID-19. It contains high titers of neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, which are intended to neutralize the virus and prevent its entry into host cells, thereby reducing viral replication and mitigating disease severity. Larkin Community Hospital evaluated this treatment in a Phase 3 clinical trial specifically focusing on early administration (within 48 hours of hospital admission) for patients at high risk of progressing to severe disease, aiming to intervene before the onset of maladaptive immune responses like cytokine release syndrome.
