Convalescent plasma is a biologic therapy consisting of plasma collected from individuals who have fully recovered from COVID-19. This plasma contains polyclonal antibodies specifically targeting the SARS-CoV-2 virus, providing passive immunity to the recipient. In the clinical trial led by Joseph M. Flynn, D.O., MPH at Norton Healthcare, this therapy was investigated as an early intervention for hospitalized high-risk COVID-19 patients to prevent disease progression to severe illness or the need for mechanical ventilation. The therapy involves the intravenous administration of approximately 200 mL of donor plasma containing high titers of neutralizing antibodies intended to facilitate viral clearance and normalize laboratory parameters in high-risk patients.
