Overview
Convalescent plasma therapy developed by the University of the West Indies (UWI) and University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) for the treatment of severe COVID-19. This biologic therapy involves the transfusion of plasma collected from recovered COVID-19 patients, which contains high titers of neutralizing antibodies against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. By providing passive immunity, the treatment aims to reduce viral replication, decrease biomarkers of inflammation, and lower the risk of death or the need for ventilatory support in patients with severe disease. A pilot clinical trial was initiated in Jamaica in 2020 to assess the efficacy and safety of this intervention.
