Convalescent plasma (Thomas Jefferson University) is a biological therapy derived from the blood of individuals who have successfully recovered from COVID-19. This plasma contains a diverse pool of polyclonal antibodies, specifically those targeting the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, which provide immediate passive immunity to the recipient. Thomas Jefferson University spearheaded research into this modality, including a Phase 2 open-label expanded access program (NCT04344938) aimed at treating hospitalized patients with severe or life-threatening COVID-19. The therapy works by neutralizing the SARS-CoV-2 virus, thereby preventing viral entry into host cells and potentially reducing the severity of the disease in patients who have not yet mounted an adequate endogenous immune response.
