Overview

Convalescent plasma is a biological therapy derived from the blood of individuals who have recovered from COVID-19. It contains high concentrations of neutralizing antibodies, specifically anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG, which provide passive immunity to recipients. In the clinical trial context associated with UNICEF, the plasma is collected from donors at least 28 days after illness onset with a required IgG titer of at least 1:320. The therapy is intended to neutralize the SARS-CoV-2 virus, thereby reducing viral load and mitigating the inflammatory response in patients with moderate, severe, or critical COVID-19. It is often evaluated as part of a multi-modal investigational approach alongside other therapies such as remdesivir, tocilizumab, and mesenchymal stem cells.
